India is a vivid mishmash of landscapes, magnificent historic sites, golden beaches, misty mountain retreats, multi-faceted people and festivities, amidst a rich cultural history. A prime destination for many, India holds surprises at every turn. With the second largest population in the world, poverty is ubiquitous in India. There are deprived communities, exploitation against women, and children working to survive instead of going to school. There is much work to be done, and local grassroots organizations have been very active in encouraging empowerment and development. Aimabroad partners up with many of the organizations to reach their aims of improving health and education, and to lend a helping hand to the women and children of India. By volunteering in India, you’ll be helping to lift the country out of its dire straits while exploring all the mysteries it has to offer. Get in touch now to embark on a journey of beauty, enlightenment and enthralling culture!

FAQ' S India Program

s India safe?

AimabroadVolunteer always ensures you that you are placed in safe environments while volunteering in India. Often, India is a country termed as having "unity in diversity," since millions of visitors travel to India annually. India is safe, except for a few places like Jammu and Kashmir, which is 1200 kilometers away - far from our placement sites. There are some instances of petty crime in big cities, but crime is rare in rural areas.
Be careful with beggars, frauds, theft, and crowd in India. Theft is quite common in places visited by tourists. More likely, a thief will pick your pocket or break into your room. There is little culture of muggings in India.

What is the program duration?

Our volunteer opportunities start on the 2nd and 4th of Monday, are available throughout the year and are 1 to 12 weeks long.

What age do I have to be a volunteer?

You must be at least 16 years old to be a volunteer and you should be in good health; there is no upper limit.

Do I have to speak a foreign language?

Volunteers on our short-term (2-3 week programs) do not need foreign language skills. Those volunteers interested in participating on one of our long-term programs need to have intermediate language abilities in the spoken language of the program country. Orientation will include an intensive introduction to Hindi language.

Are Master, Visa and other cards accepted?

Nowadays, there are ATM services in most of the cities in India, which will be open during the day. There are also several banks and money exchange services. You can bring Master card, American Express, Visa card, cash $/ Euro or travelers checks, these all are accepted. However, facilities may be limited outside major cities. Traveler's checks may also be difficult to exchange in small towns and villages, and we advise participants to have cash on hand. You may exchange money at the airport or in city .

Do I need travel insurance?

Our program does not cover liability and insurance for our volunteers. Therefore, volunteers must have appropriate insurance before joining the program. Please obtain necessary health and travel insurance before coming to India. Talk to your travel agent about this or search on the internet to see what offers are available, and make sure you look into the details of the policy. Find out if it covers airfare in case of a medical emergency.

What Should I bring for myself?

This will vary depending on what activities you want to participate in and how much you need to be comfortable during your placement. With the exception of medicine and first-aid-kit, you can buy everything that you would need for your placement in India. Here are a few suggestions:
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Waterproof jacket (a fold-away windcheater is fine)
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Sun cream
  • Water purification tablets and/or good quality water purifier
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight (torch)
  • Penknife
  • Books about your country
  • Photos of your family / friends / home
  • A few examples of your local currency
  • Colored pencils and pens, drawing books, stickers

Will there be someone to pick me up from airport?

You need not be worry about airport pick-up. One of our representatives will be waiting for you at the airport terminal. He will be holding a sign with your name on it. Please do not forget to send your detailed flight itinerary in advance.

What happens, if I want to arrive earlier than the program begins?

You can arrive several days earlier or even up to a week early for your project, however, you will be responsible for these arrangements (including accommodations and food), and must still meet the Coordinator at the airport on the designated date.

Will I have time to explore Delhi and other Indian cities during my Program

You will have plenty of time to explore the New and Old Delhi , Agra , Jaipur .

How much extra money do I need?

We manage food and accommodation for volunteers from the first to last day of program so there will not be need of more money. It depends on how much you want to expend. You may need some extra money if you plan to take part in activities outside the organization or if you just want to buy some souvenirs.

Will I have communications access?

Internet cafés, telephone booths and post offices are available in most localities and around the project where you will be placed.

Can I bring my cell phone from my home country?

Please bring your cell phone. You can use most mobile handsets with a local SIM card in India. Moreover, cell phones are available in cheap price in India.

Is it possible to change placement if I get dissatisfied

Aimabroad runs all projects and volunteers can chose project of his/ her choice or can do multiple programs where they feel more useful .

What happens if I decide to return home before the placement is over?

Once the volunteer makes a decision and pays for the program fee, upon receipt of invoice, Aimabroad does not refund any program fee under any circumstances. Nevertheless, if the volunteer have unavoidable circumstances (such as illness, death of in the family etc) may request to leave the program, we will consider to return 30% of the host family cost, if volunteer are registered for more than 30 days program. No refund will be made if program is less than 30 days and if volunteer leave program in their own decision.

Who will drop me off at the airport?

Aimabroad does not offer airport drop service. You will need to arrange a taxi or bus ride to the airport after your project is finished. This is an easy process and our in-country coordinator in India or your home stay family will be more than happy to assist you with this.

Vaccinations and Medication

This all depends on what vaccinations you already have and what country you are coming from. We suggest that you consult a travel doctor from your country before you arrive. (NOTE: Some vaccinations are needed as much as 2 months before arrival to India). Aimabroad does not cover liability and insurance of volunteers. Therefore, volunteers must have appropriate insurance before joining the program. However, you should consider the following vaccinations:
  • Hepatitis A & B
  • Diphtheria
  • Tetanus
  • Yellow fever
  • Rabies
  • Tuberculosis
  • Malaria tablets

Clothes and Climate in Placement Areas

Volunteers should dress conservatively when at their projects. Jeans and a t-shirt are acceptable. No high shorts and tank tops please. We suggest female volunteers not to wear short skirts in villages. Indian people dress modestly, and girls cover most of their bodies. Lightweight clothing and rainwear is recommended as well as warmer clothing for the evenings (light jacket / sweaters).
The climate of India is most pleasant between the months of October and March, when much of the country enjoys temperate, blue skies as well as fresh air. In the northern part of India, from December to late February, the nights turn chilly, and a sweater or jacket is required. By mid-March, the days start getting warmer, and from late April, the temperature in central India becomes too hot for comfortable travel. In May, the dust and thunderstorms precede the monsoon season from June to August.

Emergency Contact

You have India Team available to you 24/7 in case of emergency, health-related or otherwise. You will have contact information  before you arrive. If you failed to get our representative at airport or if your flight changed suddenly, Please call at Given Indian Number .

What are the characteristics of good volunteer?

If you have attributes like Independence, Patience, Sense of humor, Tolerance Willingness, Flexibility, Self-motivation and Open-mindedness, you get the most out of

This will give you a very good idea of what to expect from the people you’ll be working with. You’ll also learn local language, which will make communicating with local people much easier. Internship In India

India Internship Program

The internship program of Aimabroad Volunteers is a wonderful opportunity to gain extremely valuable experience in developing or underdeveloped countries by working in areas like social work, healthcare, education, conservation and many others. The program is ideal for students who want to seek academic credit to complete their program. Even if you don’t need the credit, enrolling in our internship program will still give you many benefits compared to just volunteering in a project. Here is what makes our internship program unique:

A supervisor

Aimabroad Volunteer will appoint you a supervisor, under which you will conduct research, study, work and write a report. The supervisor will be an expert in the field you will chose to work and the person will guide you and give you all the necessary backup for you to become an expert in the area you choose to study. Because of the guidance you’ll receive, you’ll finish your internship program successfully and gain much more out of it.

Fully Customized Internship Program

You can choose from many different areas to do your internship. If you are a social worker and would like to study and work in a similar field, we can offer you orphanage project; an environmental student can work in our conservation project; someone from educational background can do their work in the schools. There are many areas for you to choose from. They are:
  • Social Work
  • Education
  • Healthcare
  • Women's issues
  • Health sector
  • Language and culture
  • Environment and conservation
  • Flexible Program

You can choose how long you want to intern. The longer the better but we offer you shorter option also. You can basically choose from 2-12 weeks and enroll anytime of the year. On top of that, you can intern in more than one area if you want. For instance, you can choose to spend half of your time looking at environmental issues and the other half working at orphanages.

    Unique Cultural Experience

With Aimabroad Volunteers, your internship program will be much more than a normal experience. In our unique model, you’ll also learn about the culture and customs of your host country and make local friends. Many interns start their program with your unique language and culture immersion program. The program familiarizes the participants intimately with Indian Culture. After that, you’ll then stay with a host family during your program. Your host family will serve you 3 local meals and take you in as a family member. Staying with a host family will be a wonderful opportunity to learn about local customs and cuisines and you can even practice local language skills you’ll have acquired by participating in our language and cultural program. Many interns have found this model thoroughly engrossing and a complete and unique experience.

Feed Back , Medical volunteering

For the last three weeks I decided to step out of my comfort zone and volunteer in Faridabad India with AIM abroad. My first reaction off the airplane was complete culture shock of seeing a new country. I was so surprised by what I saw a part of me wanted to re board the plane back to India but now I can confidently say I am extremely happy to have stayed and had this experience. You learn so much each an every single day that every day truly feels like a week and every week feels like a day.

One of the most amazing parts of this experience was living with the host family. The amount of hospitality and kindness the host family displays became vital to help me cope with my new surroundings and feel comfortable. The host family is always working to make sure you are happy often going out of their way to sacrifice their own luxury to make you more happy. They help to work to make sure you accomplish all of your goals and constantly work to make sure you are safe and comfortable. As I traveled to various places in India I can easily say the best place I have stayed is with my host family. And I will guarantee if the family's kindness doesn't amaze you the food surely will.

While in India I was able to volunteer at a hospital, ambulance service and a afternoon slum school. In terms of the medical volunteering you are exposed to a completely different health care system that is shocking. It was amazing that I was only a college student and was able to sit in a c-section, gallbladder removal, urinary stone removal  and other various surgeries that even medical student in America would never be able to see. Aside from the medical exposure the  patient doctor interactions and cost of health care that I was exposed to gave me a unique perspective on my own health care system. Seeing this helped remind me why I wanted to be a doctor and helped show me how to truly help people.

Although I came for medical volunteering my experience in volunteering in the slum school was both surprising and amazing. Being exposed to people in India with the least almost taught me the most. To be hanging out with kids that are so happy to show you that they can recite the ABC's was mind blowing. While most kids in America are happy to receive a new toy these kids are just as excited to be picked up and tossed in the air or played with. On Christmas me and the other volunteers went to hang out with the kids which was amazing. We simply drew a Christmas tree on a blank piece of paper and handed them to the kids to color in. The awe and happiness the kids had over something so simple was sensational and something I could never forget. Being in the slums shows you the true strength of Indians and how people with nothing can have the same strength and greatness of the richest people in India.

Aside from volunteering the people you meet create friendships that are really amazing. Sharing such amazing experiences with other people make those just as unique and important as the experiences. At the end of such 3 short weeks I can confidently 100 percent guarantee that the people I met are life long friends and some of the friendships I will cherish for the rest of my life. I am writing this at the end of my experience and there is so much to say I feel like nothing I say can truly sufficiency express how amazing this experience was.

Take a chance and step out of your comfort zone to experience and unique and truly amazing world.

Merry chrisrtmas and Happy new year 2012

May this Christmas be merrier and New Year even more prosperous and fulfilling for you and your beloved ones!!!
During this Christmas and New Year of 2012, we would like to say a big thank you and send our most sincere appreciation and gratitude to you for what you have done to support our children. Without your help and support it would not have been possible for the children to be what they are today. You have given them the best possible gift of all: a caring and loving home: Alice in wonderland
Each child is unique in its own way and each has a different story to tell. These children at Alice in wonderland have endured a common but most difficult and traumatic experience that would make even the toughest soul weep. With your helping hand, these children have overcome the misery and paint a smile in their faces. We are not talking about the monetary support but the care and love you have rendered to them.
On this occasion, on behalf of these children I would like to send sincere thanks and best wishes to you and your family.
Enjoy your holidays!!!!
Best regards,
kranti sharma

information for medical volunteers

I spent two weeks in June volunteering in a small clinic in Faridabad...it was an amazing experience; the doctor was very welcoming and living with the host family was unforgettable. There is really no better way to learn about Indian culture (and food) than living with a family. I got to play with their son, learn how to cook, share stories, and learn all about Indian hospitality. If anyone has any questions feel free to send me a message! Thanks Aim Abroad

Agra, Jaipur, and Jaisalmer

During their work here, our volunteers have the opportunity to travel around northern India. We will organize trips so that volunteers can travel together by train, bus, or taxi. Hotels are about 5-10 dollars a night and food is 2-6 dollars per meal so it's cheap to travel.

Agra- 4 hours away--    http://agra-india.com/
Of course the main attraction in Agra is the Taj Mahal and it's not a site to miss! Surrounded by gardens, the beautiful pristine marble building towers above you. The tomb is perhaps the most famous building in India and it is truly a wonder of the world. Agra is very clean because no factories are allowed in the city to prevent pollution from contaminating the Taj. I would recommend going for a weekend although the city can be covered in a day trip.

Jaipur- 7 hours away ---http://www.jaipur.org.uk/
As the capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur is a huge and active city in the hills of east India with a population of 3.5 million. As the home of ancient kings of India, the city is filled with forts and palaces. You can get group tickets for all the historic sites for a discount and spend anywhere from one to four days exploring the winding staircases of the forts and intricate architecture of the palaces. To see the sunset from the top of a fort is breathtaking but remember that you will be doing a bit of a hike around the city so be comfortable and be aware of the heat. As many historic buildings as there are in the city, there are just as many animals. You will see goats, pigs, cows, monkeys, peacocks, camels, and elephants to name just a few. You can take an elephant ride to the top of Amber fort and visit a monkey temple where the monkeys will eat peanuts out of your hands.
Jaipur is also known for its shopping, filled with jewelery and textile markets that you can get great deals on. I would recommend spending a weekend to a whole week in Jaipur depending on how much you want to see.

Jaisalmer--19 hours from Delhi (take an overnight train with a bed though and you really won't notice) http://www.jaisalmer.org.uk/
Jaisalmer is in the middle of the desert which is not for everyone but can be a real life changing experience if you're up for it. In the summer, it is almost completely deserted of tourists and has its own gorgeous fort worth wandering around in to really get to see Indian life and locals. Book an overnight camel safari to see the sand dunes, travel on your own camel, and sleep under the stars. You can also travel by dirt bike or jeep to see the beauty of the desert. Jaislamer is a great place to go for a weekend.
